Geotechnical engineers for North Shore

Our home ground. Waitematā sandstone and siltstone, expansive clays and coastal cliffs.

We are based in Takapuna, and the North Shore is where we do more work than anywhere else. Most of the Shore sits on East Coast Bays Formation: layers of sandstone and siltstone that weather into stiff, often expansive clays. On flat ground that usually means a careful look at shrink-swell for slabs. On slopes and cliff tops it means a proper stability assessment.

The gullies that run down to the harbour and the east coast often hide soft alluvium and old uncontrolled fill, which is where we see most settlement problems.

Ground conditions in North Shore

East Coast Bays Formation (Waitematā Group)Interbedded sandstone and siltstone, weathering to stiff silty clays near the surface.
Tauranga Group alluviumSoft clays, silts and organic soils in valleys such as the Wairau and Shoal Bay margins.
Auckland Volcanic FieldLake Pupuke, North Head and Mt Victoria, with basalt and tuff around them.

What we look out for

  • Expansive clays that shrink and swell
  • Slope instability on steep gully sides and coastal cliffs
  • Coastal erosion along the East Coast Bays
  • Soft ground in filled gullies and old stream beds

Typical projects

  • Infill houses and minor dwellings on sloping sections
  • Retaining walls and slip repairs
  • Cliff-top setback assessments
  • Townhouse developments under PC120

Our work in North Shore

Every site is different. Geology maps and council overlays are a starting point; a site-specific investigation confirms what is actually there.
