Geotechnical engineers for Central Auckland
Volcanic cones, basalt lava flows, lava caves and reclaimed waterfront.
Central Auckland is built on and between volcanoes. Basalt can be excellent founding material, but its depth changes quickly and lava flows can hide voids. In the old stream valleys between the cones you can find soft clays and peat several metres thick.
For basements and deep excavations, groundwater and the effect on neighbouring buildings are usually the critical design issues.

Auckland Volcanic FieldBasalt lava flows, scoria cones and tuff rings from volcanoes such as Maungawhau and Maungakiekie.

Tauranga Group and reclamationSoft alluvium and peat in old stream valleys, and fill along the waterfront.
What we look out for
- Basalt of variable depth and quality, sometimes with voids or lava caves
- Soft soils and peat in old valleys
- Groundwater and dewatering for basements
- Liquefaction screening on reclaimed land
Typical projects
- Basements and retaining for apartments and townhouses
- Additions to character homes
- Commercial redevelopment
Every site is different. Geology maps and council overlays are a starting point; a site-specific investigation confirms what is actually there.
